Is there any evidence for the Exodus?

I received a question asking if there was any archaeological evidence of the Exodus.

My response is below:

Yes, there is evidence for the exodus.  I would recommend The Popular Handbook of Archaeology and the Bible by Holden and Geisler to you.  It has a brief overview and description of the various archaeological evidence supporting various historical events described in the scriptures.

They have a chapter on the Exodus and Conquest in the book.  I would refer to the book for more information, but I can give you a couple of examples.  The Ipuwer papyrus (known as Papyrus Leiden) records an account of plagues on Egypt that seems similar to the account in the Bible.  Another early Egyptian document called the Destruction of Mankind contains a full reference to the Hebrew divine name, “I AM THAT I AM”.  I would definitely pick up the book if you are interested in learning more about this topic.

Sincerely,

Matt Bilyeu
